OVERSEEDING

Lawn Overseeding

Tall fescue is a beautiful grass for about 10 months out of the year. It is a cool season grass which means it will normally grow and look its best from September through June. The heat and drought of the summer can cause turf loss, which is usually followed by an influx of weeds. It is for this reason that we highly recommend aeration and overseeding of all fescue lawns in the fall to maintain the health of the lawn and help it recover from the stress of the summer months.

  • Seed planted late summer/early fall has 2 good growing periods (fall and spring) to mature before going through the drought & heat stress associated with summer weather.
  • In the late summer/early fall, most fast-growing weeds like crabgrass will not be choking out the slower-growing permanent grass being planted.
  • Soil temperatures are still warm enough in late summer/early fall which means faster seed germination and establishment of turf.
  • Late summer/early fall seeding will not disrupt the proper timing of weed control as spring seeding will.

Our company does mechanical core aeration and then overseeds. The big advantage here is that aeration opens the soil and provides a better germination area by improving seed to soil contact. After the seed is planted, the care you give a new lawn during the first year is very important.

Consistent, frequent watering until the new seed germinates is crucial. After germination, watering frequency can be minimized but should remain consistent.
